Current and Upcoming Academic Calendars

Current and Upcoming Course Schedules

Course Days, Times, and Modalities

Master’s-level on campus courses are typically offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 9:30am and 4:30pm (EST). Classes usually meet one day a week, but some courses may meet two days a week (typically Tuesdays and Thursdays).

Master’s-level online courses are typically offered Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 5:30pm and 9:00pm (EST). Additional courses may also be offered online during the day. Daytime online courses are usually dual-modality courses where students can choose to attend on campus or online (.OWL classes), but must choose the modality during registration. Classes usually meet one day a week, but some courses may meet two days a week (typically Mondays and Thursdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays).

Doctor of Ministry courses are typically offered 12:00-2:00pm in the Fall semester; Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays at various times in the day or evening (EST) in the Spring semester; and Monday-Friday for the two-week Summer Term. Doctor of Ministry courses do not meet every week during the Fall and Spring semesters.

All online courses have at least some synchronous required class time online, with camera on, and most Master’s-level online classes meet weekly. All students, including those living outside of the Eastern Standard Time zone, are required to attend required synchronous sessions at the prescribed time and be an active participant with their cameras on. Students should be aware of differences in time zones when scheduling their courses.

Class Notes

To see special meeting times or requirements for classes, including prerequisites, and to see how classes meet different requirements, such as Ministerial & Public Leadership courses, cultural context electives, comparative religions electives, various Certificate electives, etc., please look at the far-right column on the Course Schedule, called “Class Notes.”

Cross-Listed Courses

A cross-listed course is a single course listed under two departments and/or two sections. When you register for the course, you will need to choose the most appropriate department heading to meet your curriculum/vocational requirements and/or interests. For example, “Dementia, Disabilities, & Differences” is offered as cross-listed course that is available as a THPT ministry course or a THSP spirituality course and is available as both a residential course (section .10) or as an online course (section .OWL). Talk with your advisor for help with selecting the appropriate course heading.

Internships and Praxis Project/Thesis for Master’s Level

For the MDIV, you are required to complete 6 hours of internship. MACM students are required to enroll in 3 hours of internship. MTS students who chose the Praxis Project option, rather than the Thesis option, will need to complete 3 hours of internship.

Students may choose between THPT 701 & 702 (Leadership in Context and Leadership in the Church) or THPT 703 (CPE).  THPT 701 and 702 are taught Fall/Spring, require some online class time, and typically 80-90 hours of internship time over the course of the semester.  The Fall class can be in any ministry setting, the Spring class needs to be in a church setting. For CPE, you apply to an outside program, and you can receive one unit of CPE credit (important for your resume and some jobs). You serve as an unpaid chaplain, typically in a hospital or hospice setting. I encourage you to talk over your options with your Faculty Advisor.  You can read more about your choices here: https://theology.mercer.edu/internships/

For MACM, MDIV, and MTS students, if you would like to write a thesis or praxis project as part of your elective coursework, you must register for THEO 713 Research Methodology in the Spring semester and consult with Dr. Graham Walker.
