Why study theology?

That is a great question and one I have mused over since my own days as a theology student. It begins with a sense of calling, a simple stirring of the soul to live a meaningful life impacting the lives of others. Here are a few more reasons that I find important when it comes to the question why study theology:

  • Nurture what it means to live a life that matters.
  • Ask complex questions with depth and insight.
  • Explore values rooted in meaning beyond the material.
  • Engage in meaningful work for community transformation.
  • Cultivate contemplative practices that promote justice and peace.
  • Expand knowledge about comparative religions that shape cultures and belief.
  • Shape a more just and compassionate world.

Our hope at Mercer University’s McAfee School of Theology is to nurture the spiritual life and character of students in a community that values both robust scholarship and authentic piety. Working together, we seek to equip and empower students for leadership through personal mentoring, challenging courses, community worship, and the integration of scholarship and experience in the practical tasks of service to others.

The McAfee School of Theology has a great deal to offer: the recognition of a highly respected research university; the vibrancy of Atlanta; a faculty of first-rate scholars who are committed Christians; a network of churches and other places of ministry; an innovative, fully-integrated curriculum; and all of this at a highly affordable cost.

And when a student completes their studies at McAfee School of Theology, they are ready to engage this world, not because of more learned facts, but because they better know what really matters in a world longing for meaning.

Gratefully,
The Rev. Dr. Greg DeLoach, M.Div., D.Min.
