Dr. J. Truett Gannon

Professor Emeritus

Truett GannonRev. Dr. J. Truett Gannon served as The Watkins Christian Foundation Professor of Ministry Experience from 1997-2007 and was named Professor Emeritus in 2010. He has served as the pastor of churches in North Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana and has served in numerous denominational capacities. Gannon currently serves on McAfee’s Board of Visitors and received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from McAfee’s Alumni Board in 2019.

Career: Secretary, Georgia Baptist Convention, 1951-1952; with, First Baptist Church, 1952-1976; pastor, First Baptist Church, Avondale Estates, Georgia, 1961-1973; pastor, First Baptist Church, New Orleans, 1973-1976; pastor, Smoke Rise Baptist Church, Stone Mountain, Georgia, since 1976. 1st vice president Georgia Baptist Convention, 1988, president, 1991-1992.

Membership: Chairman committee Boy Scouts American, 1977-1983, Metropolitan Atlanta council Boy Scouts American, 1977-1978. Trustee Midwestern Seminary, 1980-1990, chairman 1987-1990. Trustee Truett-McConnell College, 1985-1990, chairman 1985-1988.

Member Georgia Baptist Convention (program chairman 1970, chairman nominations committee 1982, active numerous other committees, board directors 1984, member task force 1984-1988, 1st vice president 1988-1989, president 1991-1992), Pastor’s Conferences (secretary 1962, president 1968, 77, chairman nominating com.1977, president elect 1985, president 1986-1987).

Personal Life: Married Margaret Lewis, Jan. 27, 1951. Children: Kenny Gannon, Karen Griffith.
